ROBE ACCOMMODATION

LAKESIDE MANOR HISTORY

Robe's historic Lakeside Manor was built in the early 1880s by English labourer, Sir George Danby. After inheriting his family fortune in Suffolk, England, he returned to Australia on a chartered ship with a team of carpenters, selected Italian marble fireplaces, art collectables and cedar furniture to Robe where he oversaw building the manor, modelled on one of his family mansions in provincial England.

The building is made from local limestone quarried from the nearby Woakwine Range which was transported to Robe by bullock wagon and then cut on site. The skirting boards and doors are all blackwood and cedar, the fireplaces Italian marble and the floor is baltic pine. Other fixtures and fittings were also brought out from Europe and Britan. Many rooms have bay windows so the house has an abundance of natural light. The building was originally planned to have a second floor.

The manor is 72 squares and its hallway, which is the entire length of the house, is 40m long  and  3m wide. The house has 17 main rooms with the ceilings 3.5m high in the bedrooms and 4m high in the function rooms.

While the Manor has a majestic hallway and a large ballroom, its greatest feature would be the grand library which has a massive bookcase  which measures 5.5m by 3.5m and is made of blackwood and mahogany. The library gives a generous outlook over the beautiful Lake Fellmongery.

Other rooms give a fantastic view of sprawling English style gardens, featuring a rose garden, orchard and grape vines.

The building has a colourful history and over the years has been a restaurant, hosted New Years Eve balls, Christmas parties, wedding receptions, garden parties and fetes. It has been a family home, a Bed and Breakfast Guest House and, since 2005, offers family and group holiday accommodation in Robe.

The Lakeside Manor offers an alternative to motel accommodation or caravan park accommodation by providing beautiful rooms and great rates for group accommodation Robe, corporate group accommodation Robe, family group accommodation Robe and accommodation for individuals.
